Introducing Matthew Bertrand, Interim Principal of Whitin Intermediate School
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew H. Bertrand as Interim Principal of Whitin Intermediate School (Grades 4-7), effective July 1, 2026. Mr. Bertrand brings extensive administrative expertise, valid Principal Licensure credentials, and a proven commitment to supporting student success across the secondary spectrum. This leadership transition reflects our commitment to maintaining continuity and excellence in our instructional programs while building on the strong foundation already in place.
About Mr. Bertrand
Matthew Bertrand brings extensive administrative and instructional expertise to Whitin Intermediate School. As Assistant Principal at Uxbridge High School since August 2021, Mr. Bertrand has been instrumental in managing the day-to-day operations of our high school, providing essential leadership across student discipline, staff evaluation, and testing coordination.
His professional journey demonstrates a deep commitment to educational excellence and student-centered leadership:
Before joining Uxbridge, Mr. Bertrand served as Associate Headmaster at Taunton High School, where he managed a 600+ student caseload, evaluated faculty across multiple disciplines, and initiated innovative programs to support student success. He also held the position of Assessment Specialist in Worcester, where he collaborated with administration on assessment and data analysis to drive instructional improvement.
Mr. Bertrand spent 12 years as a highly effective Social Studies teacher in Marshfield, teaching courses ranging from 9th grade World History to AP Government and AP Economics. His extensive classroom experience with students gives him nuanced understanding of adolescent development and learning needs across the middle and high school spectrum.
Mr. Bertrand holds valid Principal/Assistant Principal Licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education at the PreK–8 level, which directly qualifies him to serve as Principal of Whitin Intermediate School (Grades 4-7). He earned his Principal Licensure from Curry College in July 2015 with exceptional academic standing (GPA 3.95). His professional preparation also includes a C.A.G.S. in Educational Leadership from the University of New England (GPA 3.85), a Master's degree in Education from Fitchburg State University (GPA 3.95), and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Rhode Island College. He holds advanced Sheltered English Immersion endorsements for both teacher and administrator roles, demonstrating expertise in supporting our diverse student population.
Why Mr. Bertrand is Well-Positioned for Middle Grades Leadership
While Mr. Bertrand's most recent experience has been at the high school level, his background makes him ideally suited to lead our middle school students. His 12 years in the classroom gives him deep understanding of student development across the secondary spectrum and positions him to recognize the unique developmental needs of our Grades 4-7 students as they mature intellectually, socially, and emotionally.
His experience managing complex situations and student needs has equipped him with sophisticated conflict resolution and restorative practices that benefit younger adolescents navigating peer relationships and identity formation. His proven ability to collaborate closely with special education teachers, school adjustment counselors, and support services, combined with his Sheltered English Immersion endorsements, directly addresses the comprehensive support needs of our intermediate grade learners.
Most importantly, Mr. Bertrand understands the continuum of student development. His years coaching, mentoring, and evaluating teachers, implementing data-driven improvements, and building inclusive school cultures have taught him that the fundamental skills of instructional leadership (fostering teacher effectiveness, supporting students with diverse needs, building collaborative communities) transcend grade levels. His PreK-8 Principal Licensure reflects his preparation to lead students across this age span.
Mr. Bertrand is a North Attleboro resident who shares our commitment to public education and community engagement. He is married and the father of three sons, ages 10, 7, and 3. He has been active in the coaching community, having served as JV Baseball Coach at Marshfield High School and Sub-varsity Basketball Coach at Hingham High School.
We look forward to working with Mr. Bertrand as he assumes this important leadership role at Whitin Intermediate School. Please join us in welcoming him to his new position.
Respectfully,
David Ljungberg, Superintendent
Uxbridge Public Schools
